100 collection - Ideas for further development

I discussed with Jo and Amber the possibility of extending this work.  I have enough research to make this a box set of maybe five designers/photographers involved in album cover design which link to each other, these links could be demonstrated using one map. With more time I would have added:

Hipgnosis (Linked through sixties counter culture and mutual admiration)
Peter Saville
Malcolm Garrett
Keith Morris

I like the look and feel of single box sets, these are some we own:

The product would make more of a stamp and would be of wider appeal to more graphic designers and record collectors.

In addition I was talking about the period in history the events were occurring such as MTV starting in 1981 and the fact the Apple was developed two year after Barney died IE to emphasis the hand rendered quality of all Barney's work.  Jo suggested I could have added these to my Bubble picture.  I think this is a good idea as although I have thoroughly researched the context of this period I have not put that across as much as I could have in the work.  I had actually started doing this on the original mapping of the links between album covers however this got forgotten moving forward.  In future I will remember to check back over previous ideas so anything relevant is not forgotten.

Barney Bubbles - the video has been spotted and some positive feedback

The internet is amazing!  The video has been linked to Facebook and the Barney Bubbles blog independently.  I have also had some postive feedback which has made the long hours pulling this together very worthwhile!  The Barney bubbles blog, as detailed below, has even linked my Blog and mentioned my name and Leeds College of Art.

This 100-second career resume has been created by Lisa Whitaker, who is currently studying graphics at Leeds College of Art.
The DVD – housed in an “inside-out” sleeve and accompanied by a poster – came out of a course brief for a collection of 100 design objects in which she compiled album sleeves, including Bubbles’ design for Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello And The Attractions.
“I am fascinated by this talented man and his links to other creative people,” says Whitaker. “My moving image piece Barney Bubbles Inside Out pulls together the research and is aimed at graphic designers, record collectors and music lovers as a way of spreading the word about inspirational figure.”
Whitaker’s backgrounder on the project is here.

A bit like the ‘London to Brighton in four minutes’ film, but with better scenery. It gave me goosebumps. Love it.

    Hi
Thanks for putting my video on the Barney bubbles website… I am already starting to get feedback which is great as the brief is not due in until next Wednesday. This is a massive step for me as I have only been using Final Cut and moving image for two weeks!
I have added the poster I designed on Facebook if you would like to use this as well?
All the research I have carried out is actually on my Design Research blog which is

Final crit - follow up in Final Cut express

This is a screen print of the final cut browser window showing the sequences I have created.  I am actually editing some crawling text which you can see in the first screen.  the second screen is to watch the video back.
The red line indicates this screen needs rastorizing.  To do this select Sequence from th menu then rastorise all.

Following the feedback from the final crit regarding the font , I have asked a number of people to review the video. Overall the only part of text that is difficult to read is when the light show images are changing colour in the background and the text is crawling at the bottom.

I asked Mike Flower's advise about maybe improving the font and text.  He advised that the font I had chosen, given it was san serif and bold, was actually one he would recommend for video.  The only way I could improve is to have the text still rather than moving however I wanted to create the feeling of that psychedelic time.  I like the fact the words and image reinforce the message together.  He also said it is not always best to use bright white on a black background and instead to use a slightly grey white in video.

Overall I am happy with the finished piece so I am not going to edit the text.

TAKE 2 COLLECTION 100- BARNEY BUBBLES

This is th new improved version of the Barney bubbles clip, hope you like it.

Collection 100 - Progress crit actions

I received the following feedback from Amber and Jo at the feedback crit:

Good body of work

Speed up the opening sequence

Review brief and think about who my target audience is.

Jo felt this could have been a whole series!

After seeing the dvd She felt I could include more 2d representations of BB's work.  Noted I was going to include the bubble poster however felt should display his work 2d as well.

Following the crit I worked on the 100 Barney Bubbles poster to include in the package but taking on board the feedback I also included on the reverse pictures of some of BB's work.  I felt it important to detail the artist, album and dates with these pictures.  The plan is to print this square to fold up into the single record sleeve.

In addition after reviewing the DVD over the weekend I have also changed the timing of some sequences not only the one Jo suggested but also slowed a couple of images down.  I have also made the text bold and changed the font size from 36 to 50.  The reason for this is I was struggling to read the writing on the light show scenes and I knew what it said!

The whole seqeunce now seems to flow better than before.

Collection 100 - Preparation for Barney Bubbles poster

I was armed with all the facts, images and people involved in Barney Bubbles life however I needed some kind of order to these to create the bubbles along a timeline.  Also I wanted each Bubble's size to represent the length of time so for example he became known as Barney Bubbles after doing the Light shows in 1967 so this was 16 years until he died.  I worked out by designing the poster in Photoshop if I used 59 cm by 59cm each year could be represented by 1cm.

I also decided the people/bands who had continued to remember or were inspired by Barney, their bubbles would start from that date and continue to the present.  This meant some bubbles were partly off screen.  The effect was aesthetically pleasing to the eye and also gave a sense of how one bubble or man's influence could multiply and impact on many.

I put all the facts/images over time in a spreadsheet to provide a 'guide' for making the bubble poster.  It also helped to create 'categories and sub-categories of information as these could then help me decide which bubbles linked together:

In order to include some of his work in a 2-d format I included numbered bubbles which linked to the back of the poster.  These were images of the album covers/posters and included extra information including the date of release, album name, band and record label as appropriate.  I felt this also reinforced the images in the Moving image.

Collection 100 - Preparing the images for the Moving Image

The next step was preparing all the image files to import into Final Cut Express.  The story board was really useful as it helped me sequence the images.  I used Photoshop to prep the files.  The simplest way to ensure they were all a fixed 720x576 pixels was to create a blank file that size. The various images were then copied into the this file before I edited them as appropriate.  At this stage I wanted the flexibility to change the timings of various frames so I ordered different frames in files as follows.  this proved really helpful in final cut as I was able to make a separate sequence for each file and edit as appropriate.

Moving LP - Introducing Colin Fulcher

Psychedelic - Lights shows, 307 Portobello Rd, Teenburger

Inspired

I only had Quick player not Final Cut at home so by sequentially numbering each file in folders as above meant I was able to see if the 'animation' was working and also experiment with timings.

This whole process was very time consuming and in the end I prepared 658 images in Photoshop.

Here are some examples of the type of editing I did to create the flow and movement.  The whole process became quite organic and I seemed to get more interesting ideas on how to move from one image to another as I got into it.

Initially I had hoped to make the whole clip just sound and image without any text however there are very few images of Barney life before college.

I felt a story needed to be told to introduce Barney as Colin.  I added some text in final cut which was moving text.  One of the hardest pieces of imagery to find was his design or Bulmer's strong bow Norman Archer.  I could have scanned one from the Reason's o be cheerful however it was really small.  I actually found some beermats for sale on e-bay and luckily one was the original design from the sixties.

I used free transform and warp to good effect several times to create the effect the posters were being pasted up or being taken down

These are examples of changing opacity on layers.

Some of the images just naturally lent themselves to movement.  This was just waiting to open like curtains.

The records were easy to rotate using the free transform tool and adjusting the angle of the image.

This image was one of the organic ones,  the NME logo was already cut to this shape.

This Light show advert took some finding in the International times online archives.  I knew from my CTS essay research that Barney would have done light shows which could have been advertised in IT or OZ however the archives for OZ are not as extensive.  The fact this is Barney doing a Light show for an OZ mag benefit gig is actually a nice coincidence since he had recently done a poster for them.  It provided a nice link from Colin Fulcher to him becoming Barney Bubbles.

I achieved the colour change on the light show sequences by using the mask for hue and saturation that we had learnt from Simon on the Photoshop workshop.  By playing about with the hue and saturation I was able to achieve this interesting effect very simply.

The sound files were all edited in Cubase to exact timings worked out when the whole piece was pulled together in Final cut.  I did in fact need to edit how some sequences flowed into each other especially either side of the video clip.  James showed me how to phase the video and sound in and out in Final Cut.

100 Collection - Paul Gorman author of BB book

The Barney Bubbles website led me to the Barney Bubbles facebook page.  Paul Gorman had added the Reason to be cheerful book to the website.  I added a comment about how interesting the book was and that it had joined the dots on my research.  The author, Paul Gorman actually responded!  He thanked me for my kind words as below:

As mentioned below I am studying Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art. The latest brief has been collection 100, mine was 100 album covers, which led me to the Elvis Costello album Imperial Bedroom. The outcome of the brief has to include a product and package. I am fascinated by this talented man and all the links to other creative people. So I am making a 100 second moving image piece which pulls together the research. I plan to package this in a 7 inch single 'inside' sleeve and call ithe dvd 'Baney Bubbles Inside out'. The whole piece is really aimed at educating my fellow students on the inspirational Barney Bubbles. (Your book gets a mention too!)See more

    • Paul Gorman Look forward to seeing the result...
