Collection 100 - Design Development

These are the notes for the design development. Initially after the presentation I decided to pursue the Hipgnosis idea. This was designing an album cover style booklet about the history of Hipgnosis. I found a couple of books in the library written by Storm Thorgersen and Audrey Powell from Hipgnosis ' One hundred best album covers: the stories behind the sleeves' published by Dorling Kingsley. The audience cold be both Graphic designers and record collectors

The Hipgnosis idea on reflection was not innovative as there were so much info.  about them in books and on the Internet

By coincidence I was also researching the sixties and the counter culture press for my CTS essay. (Link to CTS essay and bibliography)  This led to links between designers and photographers as many were involved with OZ, the International Times and the underground culture forming in the Psychedelic sixties.  For example,  Hipgnosis went on to design some iconic album sleeves for Pink Floyd a band which had emerged from its live gigs at the underground clubs UFO and Middle earth.

This led me to think about this network of people and album covers which were connected from the sixties onwards.

I researched infographics for ideas how to link 100 albums, designers etc.  I also developed my original spreadsheet (shown at bottom of blog))and added links between different album covers to make it easier to map later.

The Workbook scans above are demonstrating the work I undertook on what scale the album covers would have to be for a certain size of poster.  The images would have been to small to be readable also as the researched expanded some of links were several ways which would have been difficult to demonstrate using this type of infographic.
