Design - Double page layout

Homework session 6

To design three different articles with the following audience:

1. Academic
2. Sunday Supplement
3. Younger audience

Consider
Hierarchy of information
Get the text organised first before considering image.
A4 lanscape
Column widths, margins, gutters pt size, typeface and context.

Academic

 Final

The typeface selected was a Serif font Century School book.  I deliberately tried to make the image as small and insignificant as possible.  The margins were all 8mm and the gutter was 4mm

Sunday Supplement

Initial attempt

Work In progress

The image needed to distract from the text however I did not feel the image was strong enough.  Instead I used apart of the image at the top of the page.  naturally the reader look here first.

The pt size is 8pt however this is with the auto leading.
I increased the leading on the final layout.

Final

I had chosen to design a tabloid sunday supplement such as the Mail On Sunday 'You'. The Typeface chosen was Modern 20 which is quite a decorative serif font. The pt size is 8 with leading of 11pt.  I felt the increased leading made the text more approachable than in the first attempt.  I used six columns with 3mm gutters and 8mm margins.

Younger audience

on Futura 8 point with 11 pt leading.

Type workshop week 3

We discussed our Brand choices:

The best examples :

  • Identified details
  • Interesting to see the material in context (substrates)
  • Interesting to understand the history/context -opportunity to explain
  • Technical analysis - construction and terminology
  • Use bullet points and arrows rather than paragraphs to describe
  • Critical engagement - deconstruct the type - What are the characteristics of the product- Do they fit?  What does it really mean?
  • Eg Serif - aithority, make connections
Ideas for Type journal

Look at Yellow pages ads
Record clever pieces of design

Exercise - 550 words
A5 flyer double sided

Preparation
Hierarchy  - What will grab their attention
Think purpose. who for, what is important in that context.

Promotional -event

Which info will go on which side

Type workshop

We looked at each others typeface key characteristics.  The layouts were quite impressive. Good use of white space,  Be interesting to crit in 10 weeks.

Graham discussed which letters were most common for representing the key characteristics of atypeface. The ones which provide room for flourish ie with tails, the ascenders and descenders.  So J, a, `R.

Serif fonts often appear the same as a block of text however on closer inspection they have completely different shapes and form.  This was quite apparent comparing Times New Roman and Century.

First exercise
Selecting a tone of voice - How the message is communicated.
Brand names are a good example where the typeface selection can describe what a company wants to say about themselves - one word

Think about typeface, form, case weight.
What product could it sell?

Century makes me think traditional and intelligent.  Initially though John Lewis then thought Waterstones as books traditional and intelligent.

Conversely we had to chose a Brand which was not suited to the typeface.
I chose iPhone as this is Contemporary and Modern.

Some deliberately used lowercase to indicate the unsuitability also.
Purely typeface can communicate so much.
